Möglichkeiten schaffen - 40 Jahre OrffaKraftfutter 11-12/2008 11th Orffa Deutschland Symposium On September 9 Orffa Deutschland GmbH invited their customers to the 11th annual Symposium in Dinklage. The Symposium performed again under the headline “Current Trends and developments in Animal Nutrition”. About 50 guests from feed industry as well as from authorities and consultants came listen to special lectures on animal live stock production. Chairman of the symposium was Prof. Winfried Drochner from Stuttgart/Hohenheim University a well known and respected expert in animal nutrition physiology. He presented an introduction in the topic of climatic changes and the role of animal husbandry. With a brief view to the global situation he explained the influence of different species and production forms on the emission of climatic relevant gases e.g. methane. Furthermore he showed possibilities to reduce emission by feeding strategies. Arno von der Aa from Orffa International spoke about Orffa research activities during the past years about the use of phytogenic products in different species. Then Dr. Teun Veldkamp from Wageningen University reported about possibilities of feed measurements on animal welfare related problems on broiler farms. He introduced in the topic with the current EU draft law and already used practical standards in some European countries. Secondly he discussed feeding solutions like reduction of ammonia emission and better litter quality do to the use of probiotics and clinoptilolites. The afternoon program was focusing on piglet health and nutrition. In the first part Bodo Thom from Pig Health Service Mecklenburg-Vorpommern gave a lecture about the defense in the gut of piglets and possibilities of general feeding and veterinarian strategies on gut health. Afterwards Dr. Detlef Kampf from Orffa Germany described the “Orffa Immune Concept” for protection and development of the innate and adapted immune system of young piglets. Within his lecture he explained mode of action of plasma protein and of 1/3-1/6-ß-glucans and showed trial results where these products were used alone or in combination. Bottom-up of this presentation Dr. Rolf Nordmo from Immunocorp (Norway) presented current research results on the effectiveness of different immune modulating substances and underlined that specific effects on immune system can only expected by using purified glucan products like MacroGard. At the end Burkhard Bohr from Orffa Germany showed “current topics from Orffa” including 3 new products (OTMax liquid -liquid organic trace mineral chelates-, BioflavEx -natural purified citrus flavonoids- and Volamel MG -monoglycerides of medium chain fatty acids-) and new data on Calsporin (Bac. Subtilis) and AmmoMIN (clinoptilolite) in broiler feeding. Summarizing the symposium was a good success esp. due to the deep interest within the discussions. This shows again that the most interesting current topics were chosen. This gives a good motivation for 2009.

During this symposium, on Friday 12th of Sepmber at 14.00 p.m., several workshops will be held. One of these workshops is titled: “Effects of Feed Measurements and Additives on Animal Welfare” and will be organized by Orffa Additives. In case you attend to WAFL it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in this workshop. A complete programm of the workshop can be found in the attachment. Animal welfare will become increasingly important, also for animal feed industry. Welfare parameters are taken up in (EU) legislation, but also consumer demands translated in specifications by retail may be driving forces to increase animal welfare. For many years, Orffa has taken a leading role in the introduction of new, innovative additives and concepts. The organisation of this workshop will enable Orffa to have a discussion with both industry representatives as well as scientists. The goal is to find animal welfare parameters subject to be influenced by feed measurements and additives. This workshop stimulates innovative ideas by means of new applications for current additives as well as ideas to develop new products. In this way we hope we can serve our customers to their best wishes in the future.
